5 Ways to Prevent Cavities with a Sweet Tooth

Are you a fan of cookies, cake, and candy? As tasty as these things may be, they can do a lot of damage to your smile. When you eat foods and drink beverages that contain sugar, harmful oral bacteria feeds on it and releases acids that attack your enamel. This raises your chances of developing tooth decay. Cutting back on sugar is a great way to lower your chances of cavities, but it can be easier said than done. So that you can keep your smile healthy and strong, here are five tips that will help people with a sweet tooth prevent cavities.

Tip #1: Keep a Dental Kit on You

When life gets busy, you may find yourself eating more unhealthy foods than usual. Keep a dental travel kit on you so you can clean your teeth on the go so that sugar doesn’t remain in your mouth and feed harmful oral bacteria for long periods. This should contain a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, and a small bottle of mouthwash.

Tip #2: Buy a New Toothbrush

Every three to four months, purchase a new toothbrush to ensure that the bristles are still cleaning your smile as thoroughly as they should be. Make sure to brush at least twice per day, once in the morning and once at night. Do this for two minutes each time and use fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid enamel damage and strengthen your smile against harm.

Tip #3: Floss Every Day

If you don’t floss your teeth, this leaves 40% of plaque on your smile. Floss at least once per day, preferably before you go to bed, to lessen your chances of developing cavities. Additionally, if traditional floss isn’t a good fit, consider getting a Waterpik or another type of water flosser.

Tip #4: Rinse with Mouthwash

Brushing and flossing do a great job of removing plaque, bacteria, and food particles from your mouth, but there are still spots that are difficult to reach. This is why you should rinse with mouthwash. Purchase one that contains fluoride so you can strengthen your enamel against cavities.

Tip #5: Be Picky with Sweets

It may be tempting to eat all the sweets that are offered to you, but it’s important to be picky. If your coworker offers you a brownie but you know that you’re going out for ice cream later, politely decline the chocolatey treat. This will allow you to continue consuming sweets without going overboard.
